Milepost 5’s mission is to provide a long-term artistic and economic sanctuary to support and sustain working artists and their art. Milepost 5 is dedicated to building and enhancing the arts community on its campus, in the City of Portland, and throughout the Northwest region by serving as a hub of activity and connectivity.
At Milepost 5, artists will shape this organic endeavor by owning or renting space in which to live, work and create. By teaming non-profit and for profit developers, Milepost 5 offers a new model in sustainability, where artists and creatives will always have a home. This unique community will serve residents and tenants of Milepost 5, as well as the arts community at large by providing programming space for performance, visual arts, lectures, workshops, meeting spaces, and living and studio space.

The comprehensive grounds and facilities of Milepost 5 are specifically designed to provide practical and multi-functional space within a creative atmosphere for artists to produce and exhibit work. Community gathering spaces exist throughout the site to foster spontaneous and organized interaction amongst artists. The grounds include a community garden, an outdoor courtyard and sculpture garden. Space for outdoor festivals, gatherings, and exhibitions.
The Studios
The Studios include plans for more than 100 live/work, affordable rental spaces in a historic building. The visioning for the first floor Commons consists of commercial gallery space for residents to show and sell their work, a non-profit gallery for site specific work, and event space for music, performance art, film, lectures and educational programming. Space is also being developed to accommodate a café and restaurant, small boutiques, retail and arts based non-profits. The Studios building will also be home to a community workshop for light woodworking, metal working and ceramics.
The Lofts
The Lofts are home to 54 Live/work owner occupied condominiums developed for artists and creatives. The Lofts offer a unique opportunity for artists to invest directly into the Milepost 5 community. Owning a space in the Lofts means never having to worry about rising rents while building equity. Milepost 5 understands the unique financial situations of working artists and is committed to developing creative solutions to make financing possible.
Our thanks to all the great people who have put their time and effort into Milepost 5
